The goal of the funeral rites
of the Catholic Church is to commend the dead to
God, support the Christian hope of the people
and extend consolation and solidarity to those
who mourn in the profession of our faith. As
such, the wake or prayer service is a time to
offer up prayers and the funeral Mass is a time
for all to join in bringing the peace and
consolation of Christ to those who gather.
Frequently Asked
Questions:
How do I go about
making the arrangements?
Notifying the Pastor as soon as possible
would allow maximum flexibility in making
the necessary arrangements. Funeral,
cemetery or cremation arrangements must be
discussed personally with the priest before
details of the procedures and rites can be
worked out.
What are the liturgical norms for the
funeral rite?
Since the proper venue for Mass is a sacred
place, the funeral Mass is celebrated in the
church, not at a funeral home or similar
facility. Members of the family are
encouraged to fulfill the role of lectors.
Non-Catholics may serve as pallbearers. If
the family of a deceased Catholic does not
have practicing members in the faith, the
priest may opt for a funeral liturgy outside
Mass consisting of prayers and Scripture
readings.
The casket remains closed during the rite
and is covered with a pall in remembrance of
the baptismal garment. Floral arrangements
should be limited as the church usually has
its own flowers. Musical selections and
Scripture readings are chosen with the
advice of the Pastor.
Can the eulogy be included in the funeral
rite?
The eulogy may be presented either during
the prayers on the evening before or at the
reception after the funeral rite.
Does the Catholic Church allow cremation?
The Church does not forbid cremation unless
it has been chosen for reasons which are
contrary to Catholic teaching.
Does the Church provide other services?
You may request the services of a pianist.
If you wish, you may order memorial
programs. You may also arrange for the use
of the Parish Hall for a reception. The
Catholic Women’s League may be contacted to
cater for the event.
